  • Humbucker coil volume issues

What type of layering or tension makes louder humbuckers? I tried to make a few humbuckers and they sound good, but they aren't very loud. Tried some magnet swapping and it doesn't seem to change it much. Any ideas on how to make louder humbucker coils?

I've never had a problem with any humbucker not being loud enough .Do you have the height from the strings adjusted close.
what grade magnets are you using & are they charged

      Going more basic-
How many turns per coil, and does the measured DCR seem about right?
Are the coils wired together correctly?
Have you tried running the pickups directly to the amp, bypassing volume and tone pots?

I apologize if this sounds snarky- just making sure not to overlook the obvious.

5000 turns per coil & both coils wound the same direction ,your finish ends tied together & you start wires for you ground & hot

I have them right up against the strings. I pulled a Duncan 59 out of the same slot and it was a lot louder with about the same ohm resistance.

Magnets fully charged. Tried Alnico 4, 5 and 8. Same result.

Not snarky, thanks for the help.

Little over 5,000 turns. DC is 7.9, which is about right.

I will go back and check wiring, but they sound great, just not that loud (about 20% less volume than the Duncan 59)

Haven't tried running them direct, but I just changed and hot and the ground from the pickup, no other wiring.

I wound each of these coils by hand, and not at the same time. I tried to match the wind pattern and layering, but I am sure it is somewhat different. Could this maybe be the cause?

                Is it like this?

Your color code may be different.
It still sounds like something is wired wrong.
Make sure it is wired in series like the diagram.
Try the test suggested, going straight from one pickup to the jack.
If you still have the problem, then it is in your pickup.
If you're state side, you can send it to me, and I'll check it out for you.

That small volume deficiency could be explained by magnet differences.

TPL and what the poles are made of can make a big difference- try using all the parts out of the duncan- swap magnets first then the screws and slugs and see if the volume drop follows the parts- if not somethings up with the coils which could be TPL. You can also get a bad solder joint at the pigtail to coil wire connection- ohms can read right but the inductance will be way off
