  • Immodertaion?

So where did those two discussions go? Given how many hits they had, surely there is a lot of interest in the topics. Some of it might just have been a spectator sport, but not all of it.

If you refer to the recent squandrances of time and bandwidth which are dignified by the term "threads" and which were initiated by someone who, not content to annoy PMF regulars, set out to vex two moderators in private messages, they were moved to the Septic Tank without notification.

Thanks here too, at least the instructive parts can be viewed and learned from there, just a couple clicks away.

You almost had another candidate for the Tank this morning, when Mike accurately told the owner of a preamp it was made with Radio Shack parts, and took another slagging for that. Heck even the mighty H. A. Dumble claims he's used Shack parts - it's not where the parts came from, it's what you do with them.

Doc, please help me out with this one. I was a pretty good German student, I guess that's an idiomatic phrase never heard from my teachers. "Corrosive"? that can't be right . . . maybe "etched" - greetings? A fancy signoff? I'd be glad to learn yet another thing today. Thank hevvins I still have an absorbent brain, most of the time. Herzliches Danken!

Given that they were bugging you, you have my sympathy, and I can understand closing down the discussions, but getting rid of them seems a bit drastic, kind of Unamerican, you know, against the free transfer of information, and so on. Or are they accessible? I do not see a septic tank; is that somewhere under the storm drain?

Exactly, that's where I found it. Sorry to see anything you wrote ended up there but . . . it had to happen, not thru any fault of yours. Mike you have the patience of a saint! (put smiley thing with halo here)

                Yup.
German epistolary style demands a closing that usually means "warm regards" or "heartfelt regards".

Hertzliche Grüßen, my ass! A closing consistent with the IMmoderator role is necessarily insolent or breezily indifferent (at best!), so "caustic regards" or "ätzende Grüßen" is either obligatory or another instance of foolish consistency. "Was auch immer" approximates "like, whatever, Dude."

Since you didn't ask, the DrStrangelove moniker comes from back when PMF was a subforum on Ampage and Wolfe MacLeod once asked why I had to go "german scientist" on pickup matters.

                (cough!)

So I chose DrStrangelove, sometimes closing using the original german "Herr Doktor Merkwurdigliebe".

After the Music Electronics Forum replaced Ampage, I was moderator for the Pickup Makers Forum for a full year before anyone told me. When that was discovered, the forum members remarked that I'd been excellent in the position. Upon scant reflection, I thought so, too.

Alles klaar Doc! Here and I thought maybe the phrase was a polite sendoff from the good ol' days when engraved - etched - stationery was the high class thing to send notes on. So much for my imagination, ha! I had to know more because I saw Dr. Strangelove when it came out (parents almost didn't let me go because they thought the film was about . . . something kinky!?! Only 10 years old, I'd already read "Red Alert" so I was hip to what the film was about. You can imagine the conversation.) Also it was my introduction to Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Slim Pickens, James Earl Jones and Stanley Kubrick. Helluva film! Then Fail Safe only a couple months later.

So this kind of ties the room together to borrow another quote. Well thanks for the explanations, it's a pleasure to meet you, and I'll sign off now with a phrase I picked up from last years winner of the Eurovision contest, das ist mir doch alles Wurst.

I have no command of idiomatic German. "It is but sausage to me"? It's something about sausage, right?

Is that anything like some Rainer Fassbinder- inspired porn where the underpaid underscripted male lead says, "Essen mit meinen Wurst"?

                      chYeah, right.

Yup that's the direct translation. In fact it came from an Austrian. Means "Ain't nothin' to get excited about" or "It's all the same to me" more or less. IOW, s.o.s. - same ol' sausage.

"Tchuss" is the Bavarian equivalent to Italian "Ciao", see ya' later. Spoken quickly, sounds like a little sneeze.

Love them idioms, just as in English, the natives anywhere carry on inscrutable conversations while the book-learned student or person from another region listens on in confusion. It's happened to me a lot in the UK. "Two nations separated by a common language."

There's specialized lingo too, for machine shop work & mechanics, law enforcement, military, surveying & mapping, waiters & cooks, all sorts of stuff. I find it fascinating and amusing.

Yes but all that's in the Septic Tank, you can read it all there & even learn some good things. And this thread's taken an unexpected turn too but no worries, it's all good. We can go back to our regular scheduled activities now.

I didn't know of the existence of the "Septic Tank", but it's the perfect name for the perfect place to get rid of really sucky stuff, produced by some very sick minds.

Congrats to the mods for a job well done!

The Storm Drain, and the Septic tank, are at the end of the chain.
You have to be logged in to access both.
You can not see them, if you are a non MEF member, or if you are logged out.
A well thought out place to put stuff.
