I'm gonna take a leap here that I may regret...

Personally, I thought the value of the elucidated information exceeded the level of interpersonal affronts in those posts. Hard to compare two such things, I know, but there, I've said it.

Seems to me that trashing them was an effective way to stop the elevation of the latter while obscuring the former.

However, thanks for the pointer on navigating to The Tank.

I can see that if the discussion points are not unique (and I'm thinking of the nuggets of wisdom, not the piles of dreck) then tanking the entire thread is no great loss. But as Bob notes, there may be an advantage to keeping the contents visible for the visitor. Maybe in that case the less drastic 'thread lock' could be applied?

The threads were a recycling of old concepts hashed out here 5-7 years ago -- very old news. Any nuggets you saw lay between huge steaming mounds of bullsh^H^H^H^H^H^H word salad.

They could have been handled by judicious use of the SEARCH function had the offending poster been capable of actual learning instead of being a ravening maw spewing ill-formed questions demonstrating blank incomprehension and an energetic sense of self-entitlement (not that I have any strong opinions on the matter).

The IMmoderator mentioned something about squandering bandwidth but I add time and good will to the list.

Good riddance, sez I. Da septic tank may be too good for 'em.

...but I mean it in a positive, life-affirming way.

Good catch on the reference! No, I am not Doug H, but his book EGB resides in my library

                Uhhhh, reference?

Sorry. I'd confused you with a Portland area Escher who also has impressive bass and amp builder chops.

                My bad.

Oh, goodness! Don't be sorry. I'm honored!

Douglas Richard Hofstadter wrote a book Goedel,_Escher,_Bach containing references to the visual artist M.C. Escher (not to be confused with EmmCee Usher). This Escher's known for his perception-bending drawings.

I thought that perhaps Hofstadter was jamming in the PNW, hanging with the crowd there. So I'm none of those three talented individuals

So what is the big problem? I have received no answer to the question: why can't those who are not interested just ignore it? On the web, ignoring something is a much better way to keep it from blowing up than all out insults. if Antigua insulted a famous pickup winder, so what? It was no big deal and the stuff returned to him way exceeded his "sin". Why?

I disagree that all the issues have been hashed out 5 to 7 years ago. The effects of eddy currents was well understood then? Now? How about the effect of string pull (below the level of stratitis) on the sound obtained with magnets of different strength. How much is that responsible for differences in sound? Is that known at all?

So I think there is some other factor here that is driving what I consider to be extreme responses to stuff that could just be ignored if you do not want it to grow. What is this factor?

Because they didn't. Never mind why, it was telling that they didn't.

As a result, the hit counter ballooned because people came to watch a train wreck to the exclusion of more productive discussions (such as sheep shagging and Area 51).

In the end, I saw that even your patience was exhausted, leeched out, as it were.

If you feel that the topics raised require more exploration, feel free to start some threads.
I'm certain you'd conduct a more cogent and succinct discussion.

There were PM discussions about creating a Pickup Theory subforum.
If you'd like to moderate it, I don't doubt that others here would support you in it.
You'd have my vote and Big_teee's, too.

The Threads in question, are active and open?
Why isn't anyone logging posts in them?

                            There's a new thread titled,

                            "IF we started a Pickup Theory sub-forum . . ."

What would we want it to do?

                              This raises some questions.
Does the forum receive revenue for sponsoring doubleclick ads?
If so, is the amount of revenue dependent on hit count?
If so, would the forum benefit financially if we were to have more food fights?
