  • another Q about 2 SC's in series

I'm wondering, though I might have gotten muddled somewhere along the way...

2 coils wound the same direction but opposing polarities wired humcancelling in series

    vs.

2 single coils, one RWRP series humcancelling

Is there a tonal difference or is the end result the same? Is the first option humbucking if it uses Alnico slugs? considering that in a Gibson style HB each coil is either north or south, not 50/50 each like a Fender SC.

    Hi,

I hope I can clarify this.

2 coils wound the same direction with the magnets flipped in one of them and the windings reversed in one of them series connected (coil finish(1) connected to coil finish(2) should not be tonally different from 2 single coils, one RWRP with magnets flipped on one of them and wired coil finish(1) to coil start(2) in series.

They would both be hum cancelling. They would be hum cancelling if they were wired in parallel as well.

RWRP is preferred when parallel connected humbucking with another pickup because the start (ground) of the winding is closest to the magnets in both cases, effectively shielding them and making them less prone to picking up noise. I don't think this applies when series connected.

I hope this makes some sense, I just woke up.

    S.
