I think that's just wire going to other parts of the pickup's shield. There is likly more foil inside the cover. The MM covers are separated by a divider in the middle. The bobbins are glued in so it's hard to tell exactly what's going on.

The drain wire also holds the 4/C cable against the base of the pickup, which I thought was clever. It's very well thought out.

What I'm curious about is how this would sound with the magnets bridged together with a piece of steel. I've been meaning to try it when I get these in my shop, but I'm always pressed for time. I have a regular client that has me put these in every Jazz Bass he owns.

I have an A5 version here, which I haven't tested yet because I'm still building the bass it will be installed on. With the A5 version of the MM pup, it's very easy to replace the magnet grounding as you know. The one I have doesn't have any foil inside the cover.

BTW, I've seen your work regarding the MM pups in jbasses (the recent talkbass thread ...). I thought one of those pups were beefy and punchy enough installed in the right location, but two...

I didn't see any foil in the alnico either. I like the ceramic pickup better.

Yeah, those all belong to the same guy. Well a few don't, but I think he does them for other people. I dislike the pickguard material he chooses... yuck! The pickguard shape is my design, from the first one I did for him in '94. All those basses have the Basslines MM preamp in them.

It comes out as a nice sounding bass. I might actually start making a version of that bass.

I've never seen that site before.

I had a real interesting old MM bass in my shop once. The pickup had a closed cover, and when I flipped it over, it had Jazz Bass type magnets... same size and configuration.

The owner said it was a prototype. I think it had belonged to someone famous... probably the bass player from Kool and the Gang, since I used to do a lot of work for their touring guitarist.
