  • Guild Bass Humbucker

Hey folks, I've been registered on the forum for a long time, first post ever. Kudos to such a knowledgeable group sharing their expertise.

Here's what I am up to. I have a Guild JS-2 bass I want to try to be able to get a little more balanced tone out of if I want it. It is perfect as is for that fat old school tone, and IMHO has a much better definition and mid range punch than the old Gibson mudbuckers. I have owned both.

I have a third pickup I bought years ago, and what I have in mind is rewinding or "de-winding" it to a little more mid and high friendly state than it's present ~30 K wind.
At the same time I don't want it so out of balance with the full on original that they don't blend well. This would be ideally in the bridge position.

Another possibility I wonder about would be a coil cut, which would be much simpler, but single coil with hum for sure and blend issues maybe ?

Any and all observations welcome. One other thing, I want to do this without using the stock "suck switch" that shunts all the bottom off through a series cap. I want to retain the raw power of the humbucker.

    Many thanks for your help.

I also have a JS-1 with a new issue Guild DS-1 Bisonic in, I have that sound covered and it's incredible

You didn't ask any questions nor asked for help for anything in particular, at the same time you talked about the thing you were planning to do.

I guess that's why nobody responded 'cause as we're expecting some comment about how it went?

Thanks Kojak, I can fix that.

I would like to dewind or rewind the bridge pickup to a value that give more high mid and top end presence.
To what value should the coils be wound to accomplish this and still blend well ?
Is a coil cut practical ?

I would do the rework on the third NOS pickup I have so as to be able to go back to stock if I want.

My current wiring scheme is V-V-T, 500 K pots, like a J bass. The switches and fourth pot are present but not in the circuit.

Many thanks for any observations or advice.

BTW the NOS pickup is changed to a four wire if this gives any further options.

It's just a big Honkin' humbucker, put together just like a PAF I'd say. Alnico magnet nested between two separate bobbins, two screws holding each coil on. It comes apart readily. One set of poles, one set of slugs under the cover, pretty typical construction, ~ 30 K in the original configuration.

This pic doesn't show it but I have them wired to four wire config, so they can be single series or parallel.

If it is 30k and you want to change it, that should be easy enough.
Depending on the size and height of the bobbins, I suspect they have 44, or maybe 43 wire on them.
Take the cover off, and go from there.
You could rewind them with 42.
Once you get them apart, and can measure the bobbin cores?
Calculations can be made, to determine how many turns of each size wire will fit on the bobbins.
