  • 43 AWG problem

When i start to wind a coil i can get to around 200 wounds and it will still read a resistance of about .2 kohms but if i begin to wind any farther than that the coil won't read anymore. I completely unwound the pickup and there were no breaks at all. i have absolutely no clue what is going on. any help????

You probably are, but... make sure you recoat the wire where you tested it, with something, so it isn't shorting out.

that is what's odd though is that it will be the very first time i test the coil so when i unwind it, i just go ahead and discard that wire and start with something fresh. could it be that i am putting too much tension on the wire when i'm winding it?

        too tight....

Weird, I posted this before and it disappeared. Yes you are winding too tight, especially if its plain enamel which shorts out real easy with tight winds. You want to wind so you're not stretching the wire, you don't need much tension with the thinner guages....

That's happened to me twice here... I figured I forgot to hit the post button, but I never forget that.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

My guess is that you have your meter on the wrong setting and once you have exceeded something like 1 KOhm your meter will just show nothing or a zero.

Spence may be onto something there. Fiddle a bit with the meter settings. The wrong setting will just round the number off and create the illusion that the DCR is the same.

Try to send it back for a refund as being unwindable, and see what they say. Perhaps it will be illuminating.

                              ....

I'll ask if anyone has had similar problems, I also think I heard they aren't selling 43 PE anymore too. There's no other choices, poly wire is all thats left. MWS basically sells wire, they don't cherry pickup no matter how much wire you buy, and REA is the only PE maker left in the US. They would only ship me another of the same..
