finally get to hear

hi guys
ive finally got to play one of the pups ive made. it was the bridge pup on a bass ive been making for my girlfriend to play in a band as we couldnt find a suitable bass player, and we liked the dynamics of a 3piece.

the pup is wound to around 4.2kohms for use with a preamp, or in series with the neck pup (once its in there). the neck pup is wound to 3.9kohms. th bridge pup uses 6x20mm alnico rods and the neck 5x20mm rods (2 per string in an offset arrangement giving a wider coil aswell as magnets further apart to reduce demagnetisation)

the bass sounds great to me, but i dont have much to compare it to. i dont own any other basses so i dont really have much to compare it to. the bass isnt finished, ive just been in a hurry to get my girlfriend learning again (i was borrowing a bass from a friend for her to learn on while i finished this one). ill do the final sanding and oil it once i finish the uni semester in around a month.

here are some photos of the pups and the bass.
the bass has been carved alot since this photo and has a nice rounded carve. other than the back of it there is no flat edges on the sides of the body.


this is the guitar im making for myself (been put on the back burner for the moment). also a better view of the pups for the bass.

is that the photo with the explicit toy around my neck? that was about 3 years ago, was a silly present to a friend and thought id take a photo. didnt expect people to go that far back in my photobucket, i have things to hide there

im 19 now, still young, but not as young as i was there.

What woods did you use?

I can attest to the fact that your pickups probably sound great, as mine are wound very similar. My magnet structure is very different though.

A friend of mine who has a real ear for tone said they sound "perfect".

The Bass neck (its a neckthrough which im sure youve noticed) zebrano in the middle, followed by wenge either side of that. outside of that (which doesnt account for much due to the shape of the neck) is new guinea rosewood. the body is also new guinea rosewood. New guinea rosewood is quite a cheap timber, atleast in asutralia. a few high end acoustic builders over here have been using it for necks very successfully, so i thought it could suit a bass body quite nicely. the fillet behind the truss rod (which you cant see) is walnut. i cant believe the difference in looks since its been carved, nice improvement imo. the fret markers is very nice in my oppinion, and so much less work than pearl inlay like on the guitar. just stain and use some danish oil to coat it.

the guitar is walnut body and a maple-wenge-maple neck with an ebony fingerboard. there will be a white pickguard to cover the neck join and such. the neck was originally going to be a bolt on, but i decided i might as well glue it in, and decided to screw it on as well just to be certain. the surface area of the tennon is atleast twice that of a gibson and extends further into the body, which i predict will help with sustain due to a stiffer join. also means there isnt a heel as such.

that was a year 12 major work, i actually had someone else make it, but i did the designs myself. those hubs were made by me though. ive always had an obsession with designing and making things. the more you make the more confidence you get in making and understanding how things are made. dont think ill ever get over making things.

thanks, its a heavy beast, but i tend to worry more about the balance of it. im hoping to get some more done on that now that the bass is playable. ive put it aside for a while when i got the bass started, but im looking forward to getting it finished.

Is that a seperate fingerboard, or did you put the frets in the neck the way Fender does maple boards?

its a one piece neck ala fender maple necks. i quite like the look and making of it so i think ill do some more like this.
