Anybody have the skinny on construction/specs? Got a customer who wants something similar sound-wise but not necessarily a dead ringer construction-wise, but I'd like to have the lowdown first.

These are really hard to recreate unless you make them exactly like the originals in construction. The early ones used 38 gauge wire, the later ones 42 PE. they were wound real low like 3.8K or so, the bobbins were impregnated with iron dust to knock the highs down some. Look on Ebay there is a guy in the UK that makes recreations that are probably the best available. I tried to cram that tone into a humbucker housing and got pretty close, here's a clip:

The guitar itself is part of that tone also, they were pretty cheaply made had a flat back and real dark piece of wood basically. Here's an awesome clip of Barney Kessel ripping ass on one of those guitars, incredible tone you really only can get by having one of those guitars or a good recreation:
