The threads are ground in after the magnets are ground to size. Grinding is how all high quality threads are made on machine tools etc. It's a slow way to cut threads and costs a lot as a result.

Annealing is easy. All it takes is a charcoal fire and some patience. Precise hardening and tempering for modern industry is far from easy, and is thought to involve much magic. Even so, one can do a pretty passable job on non-critical stuff at home. I do it all the time. Your biggest problem is that it's easy to burn small objects.Originally posted by rjb View Post
