  • Potting point of no return

I was potting a humbucker the other night, and was then pre-occupied with something else. Once I remembered the pick up, I went back and checked the temperature of my wax. It was at 180*F (82.2* C). I know that's too hot, but does anyone know the temp when parts start to melt? I tested my pick up, out side of a guitar, and it works. So was it a close call (besides fire risk), or not that big of a deal?

I don't know the temp where it flames up but if I were you I would consider myself lucky you had no fire and the pu works.

Just to be on the safe side, I don't go beyond 150F.I also use a double boiler. I turn off the heat as soon as the wax is fully melted. Being in a tropical country, the wax stays in a liquid state for quite a while without adding heat to it.
