  • stop a single coil, add a tap - keep winding - no workie!

I tried to do just that , stop the machine add the tap to the eyelet - keep on winding and finish as usual and hook it all up.. 4 wires -

    I had a 6 k and a 5 k addition -

I would get readings of 2.3k or 35k no matter how I hooked up the wires.

I hooked it to the amp - it buzzed like nothing else!

so I tossed the pup to the scrap tray and then went with the stacked design / 3- bobbin chassis

its too late to hook it up but its reading like I wanted 6K normal then 11 k tapped --

with the tap over the preexisting coil - I think that something seems to go wrong when I tried to just wrap over the coil and tap it.. like its not how they do it..?
maybe it is not the right way - but its been talked about by guys like me who never tried it and thought it would work - but maybe it does not work ??? ???

Hey Don, where you made the splice, how did you seal it and did you tape the spot where the splice was made. When I have done the taps I re-seal the splice with Lacquer or nail polish, then I put a small piece of the Paper tape on the coil, then lay down the splice, tape over that and then wind 2 layers loose over the tap then re-adjust tension and continue the wind, no problems as of yet..

Something really wrong with wiring! Can easily do it two ways. No.1 with three eyelets. Start on ground with eyelet one, wind to first coil size, then use tape to keep one winding stuck waaay over edge of pickup base, continue winding till finished then tie off end of coil to eyelet 3 and extra long middle winding to eyelet 2. Keep the ground the same and use switch to choose eylet 2 or 3 as hot output but make sure not to keep both connected or hum will result.

No.2 method use 4 eyelets. Start on eyelet one and wind first coil to eyelet 2. Cover with layer of tape to be safe, then wind second coil starting on eyelet 3 and finishing on eyelet 4. Use separate ground and 4 conductor to wire however you want.

Sam Lee Guy is right, the only way to make a tapped pickup work is with more than two eyelets, and one eyelet for each end of a coil wire. The only problem you may have is where to put the extra eyelets if you are using a 'normal' singlecoil sized bobbin plate. I tried to tap the way you did, and if the soldering isn't exactly perfect eventually your pickup will just die.

I just used the #2 method with three instead of four eyelets by adding one eyelet to an existing pickup which had two eyelets. Eyelet #1 was the original start, #2 was the original end, and the start of the extra wire, #3 was the end of the extra wire.

          #1 to ground
          #2 and #3 to the outside legs of a on/on push/pull pot
Center leg of of the switch went to the jack (no tone or volume pots used)

          Works fine.

nope I used 4 eyelets.. and still was getting 2.3k and 35k reads and a huge buzz.

next made a wafer 3 piece stack -- measures correct 6.k top bobbin and 5k below..

both coils were wound same direction like humbucker - and because the rod magnet splits in the middle - the lower pup was north and the top pup was south - wired in series like a humbucker..

still buzzing worse then any single coil ..

I may just quit while I'm ahead and refund the customer who wanted that Clarence White 11k/6/k tapped sound..

I even grounded the magnets thinking it was the prob..

i'm going to try glens way -- seems i started the second wraps ground on the first ground - should have started it at the first wraps finish -- i see - i see

            lost in space..

Good luck, but that's Spence's way, not mine.

Hi Don, yes I use Glens "Spence's" way also, works like a charm.

                  noiseless stack....

If you're trying to get a humbucking single coil by winding one coil on top of another one I don't think that works very well at all, I think I tried it a long time ago and it just sounded like mud. I have to do a tapped tele bridge here soon, glad you guys made all the mistakes for me :-)
