Gisbon/Marshall Page type of sound ON STAGE

    Hi,
Yes i know ,i have tons of information about Page and his guitars and amps.
Stairway was recorded with tele and supro for lead guitar but there's a 12 strings Fender for some nice heaven chords too!Page used a lot of guitars with differents amps even a transistorized model from VOX ,yes !He's got too a great recording and miking knowledge ,but first he 's a great musician and componist.
I'm looking for the Gisbon/Marshall Page type of sound ON STAGE.
But maybe he was playing with is Supro on stage? (In the The song remains the same video you can't contest the fact he played with a Marshall and Gibsons guitars (LP and Double neck),no?)
I'm going to try to wind a PAF similar to him for all the live stuff.
I've got a Garen Amp (6L6 )with 12 inches Alnico HP mod ala Supro with an OC81D Tonebender and a Tecaster,i sound very close to him on the first album.
With my Les Paul into my modified Marshall i couldn't approach his stage sound,i'm sure it's a PU problem because i try with another LP(a 72 CustomSunburst ) and i could replicate the sound of the TSRTS album(Black double lp)

This afternoon ,i had changed my dimarzio PAF(old one model with double cream bobbins)by a 79 TTOP ,it was worse than ever.A really bad sound.I bought a 1/2 pound of 42awg wire but it is not arrrived yet,so during this i'm going to try other pickups...

I let you know the results from my first PAF repro winding.

I've always heard that was a Tele for the lead.

Yeah, he uses a lot of guitars. Don't forget the dan-o too. Jimmy with the double neck or Les Paul is always the classic image of him. Like Hendrix and a Strat.

The first album was all the "dragon" Tele. You can hear the brown Tele with the bender on the last few Zep albums.

1rst Experience! Many thanks to everybody here!!

          Hi there,

I'm just coming back from my studio where i played during 2 hours my Standard LP .I'd received the wire yesterday morning but i wound the pickup last night cause i worked all the day.I finished to wind it at two o'clock in the night and to assemble and to mount it on the guitar ,this evening after my work.
I really don't know how much turns i put on the bobbins because my counter is inaccurate. Here's the story:it was my first try !My hand-made machine is a copy from what i saw at Stew-Mac ,made with pieces from a broken tape recorder and others parts from here and there, so i didn't check if the counter was true.I began to wind and after 300 turns, the wire broke,so i decided to redo it ,i peeled the copper and reset my counter.
This time the wire broken at 500 turn and i stop all to understand why it had broken before redoing it again.I carefully verify all and seeing there was nothing that could break the wire,i suspected that my finger pressure was too strong.Bingo!!The third try was the good one!But after 4 minutes of winding,
,i saw that the bobbin was almost full of wire and i stopped my machine.I read
with my Fluke 4.20K.It seemed overwounded but not to much ,i kept it like that.
The second bobbin was at 3.80k, i did some math (it's more than 5 per cents like you said Peter ),but in my head ,i had nothing to loose ,if it was too much i always could unwound some turns
I haven't found any Alnico II magnet ,then i put a long AlnicoV model.

And guess what?I couldn't find the words to describe the sound!
I began to plug my LP directly in the Marshall and there's nothing to compare with the stock Gibson or other Pup's i had tried before on it.
I was so disgusted by the bad sound that i wanted to sell my LP and i couldn't approach the Nirvana ,but today ,great day for me ,i am a lucky man ,this is the sound i wanna reach but i couldn't afford!
My pickup is powerfull (near the 57 in the neck position ,just a little less in the bass),frequencies and harmonics are well balanced(and too) just under my fingers and all i play sound wonderful, chords are plenty of grind ,keeping some natural darkness ,solo's are now very clear in the bass and the attack is very dynamic.Just aggressive when i want but sound sweet everytime,
this pickup seems to sound like one of the best PAF used in old recordings.
Then arrived the final test, wahwah, echoplex ,Marshall and a violin bow,
yes i am a Page fan,but what a good sensation if you've got the sound of you idol! I played the bow on the bass and began directly in the middle of the song (the bow solo!!)and i climbed in the high notes ,really really ,at this place the sound of the guitar isn't change by my fingers(i played since 14 and i always knew that a big part of the sound is given by the player's fingers)and i sound exactly like Page on the live album The song remains the same. But only Page plays like Page !!But i'm very proud of my Pup and a very very happy man today!!
Well ,i thanks to everybody who helps me in this forum, and i will put avideo on Utube in the next weeks ,
since that : Peace for all!

I have an old Bartolini Hi-A pickup where each coil is 1K different. So I've been experimenting with coils that mismatched.

I've made a couple of interesting pickups so far based on a 1K mismatch.

              TTop....

You seemed to have missed that Page used a TTop in the bridge I think when his PAF died..

                TT top or PAF

                Hi,
I've tried 4 TTop (1 of 68 with the decal number with gold screw ,2 dated from the 70's and one from 81 ) 2 Di Marzio old Paf's repro, 2 models 490 and even a 57 Original 57 repro before i decided to wound one myself :
My pickup is a 81 TTop base but there's only the bobbins and the mounting plate that is from the original and i've never sawn (even on the close shoots of the Page LP in the Gibson book edited in 1995 ) or heard off a TTOP on the Page's LP,where have you got this info ?
                Thanks
