  • Experimental pickup

I created a hybrid pickup of a humbucker and a single coil.

Using 2 humbucker slug bobbins, I removed the plastic from the the edge of each bobbin up to the 2nd pole piece, but left the flat intact, effectively making each into a 5 pole bobbin.

I then wound them to ~3.7K with #42. They were mounted on the baseplate such that the "blank spaces" were on the high e string on the north coil and on the low E string on the south coil. Think of the slanted mounting of a Tele or Strat pickup.

So the E and e strings are effectively single coils while the other 4 string are sensed by both coils. The pickup as a whole is a humbucker. I had to raise the high e slug a bit to balance out the string-to-string output. Maybe I should have used a screw slug for the south coil to account for that...

It is an interesting sound, humbucking grit on the middle strings and clearer on the e's. But I probably should have wound them to lower DC. Since given the smaller coil format I had to use more winds to reach the DCR - I think the impedance is too high to get more into a PAF-ish tone.

I'm going to play with it a bit more and see what I can do with it.
