  • Taller humbucker bobbins

Ordered another round of 49.2mm bobbins from GJ and the spacing is right but they're the same height as the 50mm's. They're fine bobbins but the main reason I bought the GJ 49's was they were about 1.5-2mm taller than standard, or at least that much taller than the GJ 50's.

I asked Pat about it and he said he wouldn't have any more of the taller ones, at least not for a good while. Anybody know who else sells taller humbucker bobbins or do I have to go back to slicing a couple of bobbins slightly off center to glue together as a taller bobbin again?

God I HATE it when suppliers change parts on me without warning. One of these days, somebody is going to get their act together and make and/or at least consistently be able to source the same good parts over and over -- and they're going to make a killing...

    Maybe these will work?
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

      Hello Zhang !
If my memory is right I saw taller 50 and 52 mm spaced bobbins listed on the SK site.
I had bought a bunch from WD but I am not shure if they still stock them.

      cheers

Just took some time to actually sit down and measure the bobbin height, or more accurately the space between the top and bottom flange. And here are the results:

          GJ 50mm bobbin.......................6mm
          GJ 49.2mm bobbin (new)............Also 6mm
          Allparts bobbin.........................About 6.2mm
          GJ 49.2mm bobbin (old)..............7mm

So the difference isn't quite as much as in my original post, but it's about 1mm more height -- which doesn't sound like much, but it does make a big difference when you're trying to make something in the overwound PAF range (9k+) with 42 AWG.

          Will check SK.

When I was carrying the tall bobbins I had made a large purchase thru WD. That's where I got them. Be advised they have(had) a large minimum order and probably 4-5 months wait for individual parts. That's why I quit using them.
