  • Tele neck pu question

    Hello Pickup maker's forum.
This is my first post here.
Has anyone wound a tele neck pu with 44 AWG or have any thoughts how that might sound - compared to the usual 43 AWG?

If wound to the same DCR (e.g., 7.5k), it would sound a lot thinner because the coil would be smaller.

Yes, but I was thinking of at least the stock 8000 turns - maybe up to 10000 - so the DCR would be higher than normal. The sound I'm guessing may have a little more mid range. I've got a spool of 44 AWG left from winding a pair of Rickenbacker Toasters - so I guess I'll try it and see.

I tried about 10 pickups at the neck on my Tele. Only one was a Tele neck pickup. The best thing I found (to me) was a '60s DeArmond silver foil which reads 9.42K; I think they're wound with 44, but the coil is short, about .2" iirc.

          effect of using AWG44 vs.AWG43

Well, if wound to the same DC resistance the inductance will be smaller ( and the output lower ) due to the smaller number of turns, the parasitic capacitance should also be somewhat lesser, so I expect the resonant peak to be higher while the Q factor smaller and thus the bandwidth to be somewhat larger ( slightly less character ).

If wound to the same number of turns you' ll have the same inductance, more or less the same parasitic capacitance, and a higher DC resistance due to the higher resistivity of the AWG44 wire, so I expect a resonant peak close to the original but with a lower Q ( less character ).

Keep in mind that inductance is proportional to the windings number squared, while parasitic capacitance is roughly proportional to the number of turns ( not considering the scatter vs. machine wound issue which changes the parasitic capacitance slightly ) and lastly the DC resistance actually is proportional to the windings ( provided that the winding tension has been kept constant ).

The resonant peak is determined by inductance and capacitance, while the Q factor, which affects the bandwidth, is determined also by the pickup's DC resistance.

Keep also in mind that properly modelling a pickup needs a "real life" approach,
so you have to keep into consideration the guitar cord capacitance, which has to be added to the total, being paralleled, say 40 pf/ft or 120 pf/mt. ( resistance and inductance are neglectable in short cords ) and the amp' s input circuitry.
          Hope this helps

They sound perfectly OK. Usually I only use 44 AWG when making a hot tele neck pickup though.

              +1
Use the stock number of turns. The narrower coil size helps adjust for the thinner wire. You won't notice much difference.

I love those old DeArmond pickups. When I got married I foolishly got rid of an old Silvertone guitar that had two gold foils, only one worked, and the guitar was missing most of the parts, and the wife hates clutter. I had so much old guitar stuff though...

I should have kept the pickups.
