  • SD EVH 78 Specs?

    Hi!! All.
My first post!! I have learned so much at this fourm then any other.

I was wondering if anyone has torn the 78 apart?

What is the dcr - How far are the coils mismatched? or how far do you think the winds are off from the other?

Do you think the mags are degaussd?

    THANKS! ALL!!

    Welcome firewire,
as far as I remember the slug coil had some more turns and the magnet was full charged.

      Thanks!
That more slug winds might be why some people report it being a bright pickup.
I've noted te tone zone being about 1k off but alot say it's muddy (me too)
Is this because of the two coils being so mismatched?

      Thanks!!

If the slug coil if favored, it will generally enhance/bring out more of the mids and low end and soften the highs...doesn't make it bright.

SD's EVH is essentually a hot PAF-style pickup with an A2. It weighs in at about 9.2k ohm DCR.

I don't know much about DiMarzio's Tone Zone.

Duncan lists the specs of the original version he sells (which was called the EVH but is now called the '78 Model) as:

          DC: 9.0K
          Magnet: Alnico 2

It's quite funny how he de-emphasized who the pickup was originally made for, because he started selling it as the EVH after he was told not to.

The '78 Model pickup is a faithful recreation of the legendary low-output, Alnico 2, P.A.F.-style humbucker that Seymour designed in 1978 for various high-profile artists he was working with at the time. This pickup should not be associated with any specific artist.
That doesn't tell anything about how and if the coils are mismatched, etc., but it's a place to start.

          [edit]

Kevin, I see you posted the same info... I hadn't read that far down yet!

I'm pretty sure the Tone Zone uses different gauge wire on each coil. I think read somewhere (maybe in their patent) that they skip a size, so they use like 42 and 44, or 43 and 45, etc.

In my notes I have the offset for the Fred, which is 4.49k, 5.67k.

            Hello Firewire,
yes dimarino uses different magnet wire in on pickup.I had seen that on my old FRED and the Tone Zone. But he also uses brass and plastic spacers wich looks and sounds a bit Playmobil to me.

The EVH is a overwound PAF/ PAT or T-Top pickup alike Ed modified them himself in those early years.Verry hot but not high octane.
The hotter slug coil gives you a warmer tone but it adds some quak wich makes the sound a bit cleaner.

Here are some nice samples of my Atomik Punk pickup played by Doc Heyne who used it on his new record:

I have one. Bought it to see what all the hub bub was about. It doesn't sound terrible, but you can do a lot better. I haven't actually torn it apart, but I think it measured around 8.9k. SD's method of measuring and reporting magnet strength is misleading. You couldn't hang a sticky note on a reefer using a magnet at the strength they write on the box insert. It's a proximity measurement, I'm sure. Got the thing laying around here somewhere. I'll see if I can find the time to look into it a bit deeper.

The spacers produce a softer magnetic field. That way they could use a full strength magnet.

I never associated the Fred with Ed... that's funny. I guess the Norton is also an Ed then huh?

You bought that from Me?? Been at least 6 months (probably longer) since I discontinued that version- Was never really keen on naming pickups after famous artists, as that is why it is no longer availiable....It does more than a VH vibe anyway
I kept it around for ever and ever but there really was'nt a real demand for it (oh shit, here comes the Blues Police!!)

No. I bought a Duncan '78. The "Atomic Punk Humbucker" sounds cool. You don't make them anymore?

                        Thanks everyone!!
If ED coil was short, I wonder if seymour reproduced this in the 78?
Or some how made it sound the same with a good wind?
I guess thats why he does what he does!!

To the ones that make a VH - ED sound pickup do you short the the wind?

So many factors of a pickup that make it what it is!

Cool Topic really makes you think tha even a F'ed up wind might sound good in the end!!

                        THANKS!!

                          No Dave,
Fred is related to Satch and the Tone Zone is named :The pickup that Ed did not like.So it was given to Paul Gilbert........
The modern VH sound is made with a SD custom custom if I am right.

Friend Lonnie Tottman Expressed that in fact the "Ed" humbucker haad in fact had a dead short coil- No shit. Tottman was the tech for yrs, and yrs and yrs?? Nice name for a humbucker- My version of the "Atomic Punk Humbucker has been in existance for yrs and yrs : )

Yes ,I heard that too.But there are interviews with Ed were Ed says he messed with his pickups-the coils and the wire and reworked them.
From time to time Ed sold one or another of his guitar-the owner of one stated on another forum that the pickup of his guitar was an overwound T-Top and had a hotter wound slug coil.

OK.. I thought the Fred was Satch's pickup... but why "Fred". Everytime I see the name Norton, I think of "Ed Norton" from the Honeymooners.

I had a Tone Zone once... I didn't like that pickup at all.

Duncan says he wound the original pickup for EVH. That would make sense since he's making the new one. I'm sure Eddie messed with them before that.

On the 78, we have kept one ( the best sounding one) and have had several to test against, they are 9.0 give or take, your meter and the temperature of the day.
And seymour dosnt seem to be a fan of mismatched coils, his almost always read identical, on any of his models, seems to be the same amount of turns but the slight varience in wire and tension are what make those differences, if they vary at all.
