So I guess the crappy Gretsch pickups are like the crappy Fender pickups.
These companies always seem to miss something.
Well the Gretsch-made filtertrons sound great, although the TV Jones ones sound even better. The only Gretsch-made pickups that I can't stand so far are the Dumbuckers in the Electromatics, and you just put a full size Gibby or the TV Jones stuff in there and you're golden. The instruments themselves are very well made and play really nice, for around $600 new.
I've used many TV Jones pickups, and they are the real deal for Gretsch. Most people want the original FilterTron look, which is uber-cool, but TV Jones pickups also come in a full-size HB case and even a P90 case. In any case (ooooo, I made a pun! ), they are some of the prettiest-sounding pickups on the market and can really perk up an anemic guitar.
The 5120 is a cool axe, and just need new pickups, a higher trem spring (the arm is too close to the body) and if you can manage it, a new harness to make it pretty damn righteous.
So would you just replace the trem spring with one from a real Bigsby and stick with the rest of the Gretsch-made Bigsby, or would you just replace the whole Bigsby with a real one to get the spring higher?
