I do every day : ) You don't have to cut the Cener out of the bobbin, but I do. Brings it in the realm of single coil tonalitys- The plastic kills some strength distancing the coil from the magnets

Lots of people - you can use two strat bobbins on a humbucker base with a bit of work, I do that for a luither who then cuts a nice wood top to dress then up a bit; sounds good....worth doing for something different. Getting two tele neck pickups on a humbucker plate was fun! The downside is they never sound quite like a single on it's own, but the tone is interesting.
