What is this pickup? Single Coil, three wire

Just curious about some pickups I found in my friend's miscellaneous box of guitar stuff... There is a set of three single coil pickups, three wires, but they seem "taller" than your standard single coil pickup (the white one shown in the photo). Is this perhaps a dual in one case (opposite polarity magnets) or just one big magnet inside? I think the third wire might be for grounding the metallic cover?

My guess is that it is stacked? Have you taken any resistance measurements?

So then the white wire has no connection to the coil. Fair enough.

3-wire pickups give the option of phase reversal switching (some refer to it a pseudo-phase). I sometimes do this for Tele customers with the neck pickup; disconnect the cover from one end of the winding and solder on a separate ground lead.
