Is there anything different about a round slug v. a square slug as far as eddy currents?

Not really. The real rule is that it varies as the square of the minimum dimension constraining the eddy currents. It the case of pickups, the relevant dimensions would be for eddy currents that are more or less parallel with the turns of the coil.

I notice Bartolini used square poles in his original designs. He talks about it in the patent, but it's mainly about the shape of the magnetic field v. round poles.

Right. He is worried about the static magnetic field. Not that it makes that much difference. It may be that square was easier to make.

It uses an irritating non-standard line setting like 7data,1parity odd, 2400
so confirm it with a modem program first.

First, thanks for the serial commands Salvarson! Works like a charm. Now I just have to concatinate the string into the various sections and I'm golden.

No, not while winding. I'd have to use a brush system to measure the bobbin end and that would probably screw up any reading. I'm building a new winder/control and data system and hoping to have everything run through my laptop using labview. I want to be able to wind the pickup and have the software log the L/R/C of each pickup into MSAccess for customer report generation. Would have been easier if it had a USB port, but with the serial commands I can access the Extech and read the return string.
