How would it work if put soft-iron pieces between the magnets, and then wind the coil? Can I get more inductance with smaller coil? Or is it just crazy idea?

The soft iron pieces would provide a very attractive (low reluctance) return path for the magnetic field lines between the north and south poles of the magnets.
That's like partially short-circuiting the magnets.
So less field lines will be available to magnetize the strings.- Own Opinions Only -

Ok. Thank you. So it is not very good idea.
