  • strat pickup - what do the screw height adjuster screw into?

simple enough question.... in other words, what material is the strat pickup height adjuster screw screwing into - is it mainly vulcanised fibre? (or are there ABS/plastic style strat pickups made in china for example?)

If so, Iuess the height screws normally self tapping (as in this ad 6 CHROME GUITAR PICKUP SCREWS AND SPRINGS STRAT ETC NEW | eBay UK ).

ideally, has anyone simply got the spec of the screw normally used?!!

Any idea of a good hole size if making a pcb the same size as a strat pickup...for such self tapping screws to go into?

    tks,
    pesky.

    Those aren't the right screws.

Most vintage-type Strat pickups screw into vulcanized fiber.

The correct screw for a Fender spec strat is 6-32 x 3/4", or 5/8". It is not self-tapping. It is a machine screw, what you are linking to looks like a wood or metal screw.

The recommended tap hole size for this thread in FR4 would be a #36 drill, or 0.1065" ID. Here's a link to a table of tap drill sizes.

You will also need a 6-32 tap and a hand tap wrench to thread the holes. You should be able to get them in a hardware store, not sure about the availability of US threads in a metric country, though.

The 6-32 is the Stock Fender size.
In new forbon, I use a 5-40 x 3/4" Stainless With Phillips head. They are a little smaller and look nice.
These fit the holes already in the Mojo Flatwork.
I can buy those in bulk.

          Here's another chart.
ANSI Screw and Nut Threads Size Chart - Engineers Edge
It has all kind of different size data available at that site.
I use my handy Dandy metric and US digital caliper, and the chart and you can find something close in metric.
Forbon is easy to thread so all you have to do is get close.
Also I use the Surgical tubing instead of the springs.
          No Harmonics with rubber tubing.

Old thread of mine I know (I like a breather between successive posts) ...and I should have asked back then, but where do folks source such 6-32 x 3/4", (or 5-40 x 3/4") height adjuster screws from ...preferably for a price that won't make my head turn 360 degrees while projectile vomiting.

Also what finish do you normally role with - nickel, stainless ...also are such screws available in black?

              Hello:
If you use the Mojo pre drilled flatwork, A 5x40 Machine screw works great.
I use the 5x40x3/4" Stainless Screws that are sold in bulk.
Scott is correct the size 6 is the standard size, but I like the 5, it's a little neater looking and fits the Mojo fiber without modifications.
              Good Luck,

To Tap a hole in forbon i just use a 6-32 x 3/4" (just a standard strat pickup mounting screw)
grind a taper on the end till it looks almost pointy like a wood screw ,when threading it in i use a jig to make sure its going in at 90 degree
