I have some Humbuckers I like that have one coil with one type of wire and the other coil another.
I also have some hybrids with one coil being 43 Ga, and the other 42.
You can come up with some unique qualities that way.

I had thought of that: If I run out of PE partway through a pickup, graft on some SPN or HF and finish... see what it does?

If it's the same gauge, it wont do anything different from using the same type of wire all the way through.

But you can switch gauges. Peavey has a patent on that, and a few companies also make pickups that way.

I make some with a different gauge on each coil.
