  • Best way to store your charged magnets?

I'm in a situation where my winding is becoming more frequent than it has been in the past and I've got a rapidly growing collection of humbucker bar magnets of various types.

What's the best way to store these? Currently, I'm buying them pre-charged. Some of my magnets are also pulled from older pickups so they are charged as well.

I'm concerned with maintaining their polarity and charge as best as I can.

    Thanks!

So it's fine for them to all lump together N to S as long as I keep ceramics separate?

If that's the case, I'll likely buy a few multi-compartment plastic boxes from the hardware store (the type one might keep bolts and screws in) and use those. Then I can keep them separated by type and I could keep ceramics in another case all together.

      Sound like a good plan?

I agree with what Copper said.
I would Add that I always remagnitize all Alnicos before I Use them, with Neo Magnets.
In Single Coils I remagnitize them after I build them.
You don't really have to worry much about the Ceramics.
        They keep their Charge Well.
Alnico's are much easier to Alter.
        Good Luck,

Thanks. I suspect that magnetizing/remagnetizing my own is in my future. Right now I still view my pickup winding as "a hobby that's getting out of hand" and haven't yet accepted that it's an obsession.

I'm a hobby small Volume Winder also.
Neo Magnets are inexpensive, and very easy to use and recharge Alnicos.
            Very much worth your time.

I've outgrown the plastic parts boxes. I'm trying to find some wooden card catalog cabinets, like what libraries and schools used to use for the Dewey Decimal System cards. I've seen similar in old post offices too. I'd love to get my grimy paws on some of those real big ones!

Make sure that they're not stored in such a way where the edges are repelling each other.
Take some measurements of the Gauss level of a few magnets and log them, mark them, then store them. Leave them sit for 6 months or so and then take another Gauss reading. That will tell you if and how the method you're using to store them is affecting them.

I have a big filing cabinet in my shop and I stick my bar magnets to it on edge in vertical rows a couple of inches apart. A5's on top, then A4, A3.... etc.
I also mark the ends with a dot of different colors of nail polish because a Sharpie or other permanent markers will rub off from handling them when charging and de-Gaussing them.

                Rob.
