First wind

Hey Guys,

I'm in the middle of my first wind. A tele neck pickup.

Supposed to be 43Ga wire I got, I'm guessing it is, not labled, measured about .0025 with my mic.

Any how, I'm at what my counter says at 7000 turns.

I measured my DCR and its at 4.3K.

That doesn't sound right to me.

Rough measure and it looks like I have about 3/32 left of bobbin to fill.

Any ideas what might be going on?

I'll wait till I get a response before continuing.

Maybe you wound too tight & you probably stretched the wire causing it to short
I would start over & use a little less tension
but that's a little large for 43 gauge wire ? Isn't it maybe not

I'm really concerned about the ga, and quality of the wire.

Are You sure your counter is reading correctly?
Also you can Measure out 10 feet of wire, and measure the DCR.
Compare your 10 Foot DCR to this Coil Estimator.

Wow. I am with counter not reading proper. 7000 turns at 43 should be around 7.5k or so depending on the length. That number is for moderate tension and a bucker bobbin so I would think maybe +/- 5% because the tele pup is taller.
Copperhead- I think if it nicked in the middle somewhere you would not get a reading at all because the flow would stop between the start and finish.

It happened to me , when i was experimenting with a new clamp for a tensioner ,it worked just fine for 42 gauge, but with 43 gauge i got a bunch of dc reading that was way lower than they suppose to be
so too much tension was the culprit

Well I nipped the wire there at 4.3K and soldered some leads and a jack on it.

plugged it into a 57 Princeton clone I built and excited it with a A440 tuning fork.

Output was REAL weak.

Oh well, just like pancakess.... the first one is always screwed up.

I'll cut fresh flatwork tomorrow, and build another,

For a prototype, splice some more wire on it and wind it some more.
Keep working on it till you get it to sound good.
I wouldn' necessarilly start over.
Did you try measuring 10 feet of wire?
I would do that, measure it, and tell us what it reads.

I'll meausre it tomorrow, I've been wanting to use my low ohm meter.
