  • Magnet dismensions and number of windings

    Hello!
    I'm going to make my first diy humbucker. It'll be a copy of Slash's SD APH-2. Magnet AlNiCo II, neck humb, resistance 7,9kOhm. There's two things I need to be happy - dismensions of the magnet and number of windings. I'm going to use is 0,2mm thick. Will it be good?
    Och, and my guitar is Epiphone Les Paul Standard (mahogany body and flame maple top).
    The dismensions of magnet are roughly 60x13x5mm?

    Thanks for help!

    Sounds like a good pickup to build.
    Welcome to the forum.
    English is probably not your main language.
    The magnet sounds like a standard Humbucker Magnet.
    Not sure what the 0,2mm thick refers to.
    Probably the wire.
    Let me refer you to some references.

      0,2mm would be about 32 AWG. That's too heavy for what you want. You want 42 AWG which is 0,0632mm.

      You can buy some wire here: Andreas Pickup Parts

      They are in the Ukraine.

        Thanks! But... Its more expensive than I thought :/ I don't want to pay more than 60pln (that's about 18$).
        All I need is magnet and wire. The rest I'll do myself
        Where can I buy magnets? And the dismensions 60x13x5mm are good?

        Greetings, hubox

          42 AWG 1/2 lb netto Pickup Polyurethane winding wire - Andreas Pickup Parts
          There is a 1/2 Lb for $18.
          Like David said he is in the Ukraine.
          That would probably be easier, and Cheaper for you that Ordering from the U.S.A.
          I think he sells magnets also.

              60x13x5mm?
              60mm=2.36 Inches.
              13mm=.511 Inches.
              5mm=.197 Inches.
              A little wide, and a little thick.

                  The SD APH-2 uses Alnico II magnets. It's a slightly overwound version of the Alnico II Pro pickup.

                  The Alnico II reads Alnico II Pro: 7.6k/7.85K. The notes I have say the neck gets 4964 turns of 42 AWG and the bridge gets 5629 turns. So you want to try and get a little more than that if you can for the bridge.

                    Sorry for being a noodnick (sp?)- but does the pickup really know the difference between 4964 turns and 5000 turns?

                      David, I have calculated that for APH-2 it will be 5665 turns I've used the proportionality.

                      7,85 - 5629
                      7,9 - x and cross...

                      7,9 * 5629 = 7,85x
                      44469,1 = 7,85x / :7,85
                      x = ~5665

                      Is it good?

                        Here's the Salvarsan Coil Estimator, if you don't have it.
                        Coil Estimator
                        If your neck pickup turns out too Muddy, You may want to back off the turns.
                        The Pearly Gates at 7.3k Works out better for me, with A2 Magnets.
                        The Bridge works out better stouter. I make mine 8.8-9.2k.
                        Experiment to see what you like best.

                          Hmm... It calculated 9927 winds for perfect scatter o.o

                            That's a good question! That number was posted here:

                            Click on the Pickups link to the right, and then "Humbucker's Calculated turns" 1 & 2.

                            I've tried a few of these and find they are off a bit, but they are a god starting point.
