  • P90 magnets asembly

I'm now asembling my first P 90' i really don't know how to assembly the two magnets bar.
In order toretain the keeper bar the magnets should be set north facing south, but this sound pretty strange... It make more sense to me setting the magnets north facing north ( or S facing S) with the keeper bar in the middle, but this way the magnets would pull each other apart... I'm pretty confused...could someone help me...please?

Here's a question for you Corcia
With north facing south magnets with the keeper in the middle ,What polarity is the pickup ?

      You have it Correct.
      N facing N or S Facing S.
And, Yes they do try to push away from each other.
      I think the Real P90s Used A5s.
      Prefer A2s Myself.
One thing about bar magnets they are easy to change and you can experiment with Gauss, and Magnet Type.
      Good Luck,

I dont like A2 magnets alone in a P-90 ,just too weak
they do sound ok in a humbucker sized 90

Hey Copper, Put some A8s in there!
Actually I would probably like them better.

Actually nearly all of the early/mid 50's P-90's that I've had come through were A-2

Was it A2 or non oriented A5?

                            How would you know.
                            I repaired a P90 from a 63 SG.
Recharged the magnets, and they were a rough magnet and were real weak even after recharging.
I thought they may be A3s.

Well that's what I'm asking. Non oriented A5 is weaker, similar to A2. But how can one tell by looking at them? You really can't.

It seems Gibson used what ever they could get at the time. There was no design consideration put into choosing a magnet.
