All the years I spent working on computers, that was the joke we used a lot. We would tell people "They run on smoke. If you don't believe it, just try to use one after you let the smoke get out."

Thanks Sonny and all you other freaks, yes it turned out pretty good considering the piece of wood was classified as "paint grade" I had intended to paint it but when I saw it I thought it would be ok for a lacquer job. The guy I bought it off was quite surprised.
Just putting the clear coats on another strat which is candy red sparkle
Sure is a bummer having to wait so long before I can post picks. I have 3 curing in the shed now. The Mary Kaye came up real good. Good colour and the grain lines are easy to see. The other one is the candy tangerine.

        • Ward, when you put the wood toppers on humbuckers do you still use standard height slugs and just raise them up so they're flush with the top of the wood?
          Thanks

Rob, the humbucker woodys I made are full wooden bobbins not tops. I've made 4 woody buckers, all of the bobbins were taller, that was the reason for making them, so I could have taller coils, there was only one slug bobbin that was so tall the slugs were not long enough, so my remedy for that one was to use two slugs butted up per hole. I surfaced the cuts so they were flat and level and they seem to do the job. It was a bit of work but seeing as it was only a one off I didn't mind too much.
I cut about 4mm off the top of 6 and pushed them in so they came out the bottom the right amount, for the top ones I had to do them individually coz the bottom ones were all a little different size, so per slug I would put the slug in the hole UPSIDE DOWN and with a bit of masking tape I stuck it to the bit of slug hanging out the top, then I cut that bit off allowing for the width of the mini hack blade and the truing up of the cut surface. If I was real close size wise with the top ones I would just move the bottom one up or down so the top one was level with the top of the bobbin. A little super glue to hold the top ones in IIR. Like I said, a bit of work but that's how I did it and it seems to work. Necessity is the mother of invention.

I can help you store some of them, if you run out of room.
I've got 20 Acres of storage space.

Fantastic, now I just need to get em over there.
Back on the dummy coil for a mo, I was just on the other thread where the coil thing was first mentioned and it seems shielding the coil is a good idea, so I shielded mine and yes, it is now even better. You can let go of the guitar without that buzz happening, now that in itself is a break through. Oh well, pity I'm the only single coil freak around here.

                • Where is everyone hiding tonight?
                  Been pretty quiet!
I am building a nother Mini baby blade neck pickup.
I keep trying more, and I keep making them less wire.
This blade is with the new red 42 SPN.
Can't wait till I get it done and in the guitar.
                  Hopefully tomorrow.

                        • I just put a dummy coil in my triple P-90 guitar and the mongrel doesn't work. Do I have to make a coil with more DCR?

I shipped out that set of 1965 style single coils to the customer today and that's about it. Might know something on how he likes them next week. My favorite local customer dropped by this afternoon for me to re-do part of the setup on his 335 I did a couple of days ago. (that red blotchy one) The neck had moved some over a couple of days and gave it too much relief. It was an easy fix but it took an extra 3/4 turn on the truss rod, and re-checking the intonation. I think that the neck on that one is more flexible than some of them I have seen. Hope it stays put this time, it is giving me a bad rap. I had it straight as an arrow the other day. He also dropped off a strat of his just so I could measure one of the pickups in it in case he wanted a copy made. I thought that was nice of him.

bummer. I guess the P90s might need more DCR in the dummy coil, what do they have, maybe 25% more turns than the strats?
