Reading about them and now I'm confused.

It states that each single coil has two thin bobbins- I thought a single coil
simply meant there was only one bobbin.

Will somebody explain my confusion?

I'm sure interested in the design of them so greater details that weren't included
with the article would be appreciated too.

You may have to buy one to see how its all made.
If it is a rod magnet humbucker, not sure how he gets by with the steel plate on the bottom?
I have good results with mini blade buckers, and you can get all the parts ready made at mojo.

The blades are probably my next attempt Terry.

From experience, if you want the blades to sound like SCs Start low on DCR.
It also keeps them less middy!

Single-coil is often used to refer to the shape or style of pickup commonly used by fender; not just the actual construction. You could call P90s a single-coil, as they are a single coil pickup, but we just call them P90s so there is no confusion. Technically speaking, the pickup you mentioned is constructed in a two-wire configuration, and since the two smaller coils are connected in series, it is viewed as a 'single' coil as it is not split into a 4-wire configuration, only set apart with a gap between them so to speak. You could call any humbucker with a 2-wire configuration a single coil if you wanted to, but I wouldn't recommend it as it might confuse others as to what kind of pickup you are referring to.

Yes and no.
If the two coils are wired together out of phase then it is a humbucker.
If the Shush puppy is wired with both coils in phase then it would be electrically a Single coil.
That may explain why it has a steal baseplate on the bottom.
If that is the case, sure be a lot of work to build to accomplish the same thing as a SC.
On the two wire comment, The PAF is a typical 2 wire humbucker, but Humbucker it is.

** watched the vid again, and he calls it a hum canceling pickup.
Would like to have one to play with, and understand the polarity and base plate.

2 coils side by side & having 2 sets of poles IMO are humbuckers ,a stack pickup is a humcanceling ,but I don't consider it a humbucker

With that said on the puppy, is one coil north up, and the other south up?
Calling it a Single Coil is a misnomer!

As i seen in the video ,2 small coils made probably from fiber & small alnico magnets (which the screws attach the bobbins to the baseplate) & both coils are close together could possibly effect both magnetic fields,& cause fields to degauss .
the base plate could help prevent from magnets degaussing

Why not? They are rod magnets. So one coil has north facing up, and the other is South. The steel plate connects the bottoms of the two rows of poles.

This is not a humbucker with a bar magnet on its side.

Thanks, that is just tieing the ends together on rod magnets.
So it would be the same as a steel plate on the bottom of a mini humbucker with the bar mags vertical.

It's also increasing the inductance, and will make the pickup sound warmer and a bit louder.

Single coil SIZE pickups. People call Strat pickups "single coils," even if they are hum canceling. So you hear the phrase "hum canceling single coils" which is an oxymoron.
