  • Wind directly on bar magnet - blade-like

Hi - I'm planning to make a pickup for a cigar-box guitar. The entire pickup needs to be not much more than 1/2" tall. My idea is to make a blade-style pickup, using an alnico bar as the actual blade on which the coils are wound. The bar would be positioned with either the north or south side pointing up towards the strings, and the coils wound across the the length of the bar end-to-end. There would be very thin flanges (like, credit-card thin) on the top and bottom to hold the whole-thing together, essentially forming a "bobbin". So I guess this is a basically a strat-style pickup, but using a single flat bar.

So my question is ---- would this even work? I'm not trying to reproduce any sort of classic pickup sound, as this is a total homemade cigar box lo-fi sort of thing. Basically I just want to amplify it.

Make something to resemble the top of these

,to fit over your magnet & I would wrap the magnet in tape before winding

OK, cool - didn't realize this existed. Looks like just what I had in mind. Gotcha on the tape, good idea. Thanks

What you are describing is exactly how a Gibson melody maker bridge pickup is made, especially the larger ones from 59/60.
