Hi everyone i’m new hobbyst here,i want to make BRIDGE humbucker pickup for (thrash)metal guitar sound.Reason that i want to do this is becouse i want to wound coils of the pickup by the hand all the way i wouldn’t do it by machine.I know there is a lot of work to be done but i wat to give it a try.Idea is to copy one of the existing pickups like Dimarzio The Breed,or Bare Knuckle Nailbomb,Painkiller ... The main problem is that i cant find anywhere specs of this type of humbuckers.Bobin dimesions width, height and number of turns per coil, frequency response.I found the specs for PAF humbuckers and some older ones but i can’t seem to find „modern“ ones.I was thinking to make humbucker with Alnico 5 magnets and plain enamel 43AWG.Can anyone help me about this it doesn’t have to be one of this humbuckers that i mentioned? Thanks

Welcome to the Forum.
Here is some information on Dimarzio pickups.
http://music-electronics-forum.com/a...uick_guide.pdf
Dealing with high output pickups use small wire with lots of turns, and either use regular screw and slug bobbins, or use blades.

If you are wanting to overwind a lot, I would probably choose 44 SPN wire.
That will give the 16-18k DCR range.
Also consider A8, A9, or C8 magnets.
Anyone else got any ideas, or information?Last edited by big_teee; 11-19-2013, 05:15 PM."If Hitler invaded Hell, I would make at least a favourable reference of the Devil in the House of Commons." Winston Churchill

You won't find many specifics on pickup winding data.
The Specifics, Pickup Winders don't usually share their Magic recipes.
Basically you have 2 options.
regular bobbins or blades.
The rest is just basic winding.
Small wire, and hot magnets is what most do for metal.
With 42 gauge, you can do 8.5-9.5k
With 43 Gauge, you can do 14-16k.
with 44 gauge, up to 18k or so.
You can wind hotter with 46 Gauge, but I don't have any experience with it.
Then just do lots of playing and tone testing.
That is what the rest of us do.
We can help you here if you have a problem on your build, but you will have to do the rest.
Good Luck,
T
**Anyone else have any ideas or info on high output Humbuckers suitable for METAL?
Please jump in!
The 16k I was referring to was for both bobbins.
7-8k per bobbin.Last edited by big_teee; 11-22-2013, 03:16 AM."If Hitler invaded Hell, I would make at least a favourable reference of the Devil in the House of Commons." Winston Churchill

I don't think the DCR is really what you want to shoot for, rather # of turns. That said you still can get higher DCR numbers with more tension of the wire. I've gotten 10K with 42SPE; 16.5K with 43SPE; I'm sure 18 or 20K is attainable with 44SPE. In the 2 cases with 42 @ 10K and 43 @ 16.5K there was good tension on the wire, leading to a little stretch. With the tension and amount of turns you're going to have such a bump in the mids that you'll probably want to use either A8, A9 or C8 magnets. The 10K used an A8 and had a good amount of bite to it; the 16.5K had C8 and still retained clarity with all the output and mids of all that 43SPE wire.
Nice thing about trad HBs is if you're not crazy about the sound you can always just try a different magnet. Can make a night and day difference in a pup's utility.
Cheers,

There are still a lot of hobbyist winders that use a drill or other simple winding device.
If so then they are probably depending on DCR for the final determination of what they end up.
Gauss &, ICL, and Turns counters are all desireable winding tools, but not required if you just want to make a few of your homebrew pickups.

How about it Disco, did you come up with anything.
I just built a 50mm bridge pickup with 43 gauge SPN.
It sounds great, It is around 15.5-16k DCR.
This one has a fully charged A2 Magnet, to match the A2 Neck pickup.
It still cleans up nicely, and will drive the Hell out of an amp.
It has about a 300 ohm offset, the slug coil is the highest DCR.
Not too dark sounding, and it still has good highs and Lows, Not too Midi.
I used the Guitar Parts USA large bobbins, and the mojo short leg Base plate.
This Pickup is hot enough it would probably split well, but I went with regular humbucker wiring.
Good Luck,

I'm currently rebuilding and rewinding pickups for a import Fat Strat Guitar.
It has 2 humbuckers, 1 tone, and 1 Vol control.
I am rewinding the bridge with 43SP wire, to 15.5-16k.
Will rewind the neck with 42SP wire, to 7-7.3k.
The pickups had chrome covers, with brass base plates.
I will leave the chrome covers off and make the pickups zebra pickups one black bobbin, and one vintage white bobbin.
I will let you know how it turns out.
