  • Wiring those puppies up?

I do apologize if this is the wrong forum...it's the only one I frequent and feel comfortable here...

I recently finished a Strat style build and wound two HB's for it. I wanted 1 vol, 2 tones, 3 way lever switch. ( 2 wire- no splits or such)

I haven't been able to find any wiring schematics other than one that didn't work so then I considered 1 vol, 1 tone, blender, 3 way lever switch and can't find that one either.

I'm now thinking it will probably be easier just to wire it up like a standard Tele leaving one pot doing nothing with the 3 way...your thoughts and/or help?

    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hi Michael:
    Here's one like that.
    Wiring Diagram
There is also one with a push-pull for split.

The 3 way is a LP toggle, but you should be able to use a 3 way tele switch OK.

      Thanks Terry.

That first one is the way I wired it. Something wrong with it. Tones aren't working and both pups on in all positions.

I've just read some others having the same issue with that wiring.
I did find one that is completely different and will give it a try this eve. Found it in a forum and fortunately drew it before I left and didn't bookmark.

The big difference is the lugs being used on the 3 way which is making sense to me as I original thought something was wrong with my 3 way...I'll find out.

Thought I had a better grip on wiring...lesson learned.

If the new wiring attempt is right I'll post the differences that made it work out...maybe it's just me screwing it up converting from a toggle to the 3 way blade/lever.

Let me go over the layout, and I'll see If I see something wrong.

You may have had a switch issue.
I always check with a meter as I wire.
plug a cord in the Jack, and check ohms from the plug of the cord, to the Master Volume Pot.
with the volume turned all the way up you should check from plug to the switch.
check from plug to each side of the switch, and make sure you can open the circuit with the switch.
Then wire from the switch to the tone pots.
check ohms from plug to each tone pot, and make sure you can open the circut to each tone pot with the switch.
Then add the pickup to the circuit, and it should work.

Right now what I think went wrong (other than not checking with meter) is the schematic has a toggle switch and I'm using a blade/lever 3way....and I think
I messed up on which lugs to use.
I know I used different lugs on the 3 way than the schematic I found this morning ...so this eve. I'll find out if it's the wiring/switch or me brainpan. Hope it's not all them

This may be just what you're looking for, from Dimarzio.

                That's exactly how it's wired.
I ordered a switch. Don't want to go back in it without one. I think that's the problem.

Well I couldn't wait and had to go back in it without a new switch...

EVERY guitar I've built has had something weird or some little thing that I have to attend to...this one has been the electronics so I wasn't surprised when I got the pickguard removed that my meter wouldn't work lol...so I removed all the wiring from the switch and rewired it making absolutely sure it was as perfect as I could. Plugged it in and working great. I replaced all the wire to/from the switch too so I have no idea what was wrong but glad it's working.

Haven't wound but of few HB's so it was sweet that they are...well they beat the hell out of the burstbuckers in my LP so I'm proud for that LOL. (lucky me)
