  • Bass pickup potting

I am rewinding a neck pickup from a '08 Rickenbacker 4003 bass for a musician friend. The AWG 44 that came off the bobbin was definitely not potted. Are bass pickups typically not potted?

A lot of old pickups were not potted.
Also sounds like some newer ones were not potted either.
If wound tightly and taped, it may be ok.
Here, I pot everything, if it has a cover I pot with the cover on.
I do that because it makes the bass much quieter when you touch the controls, and pickup.
Does away with the hot clangy sounds when you touch them.
No one wants harmonics much from a bass, so IMO the quieter the better.
But, some of this is personal preference.

Thanks T. Pretty much phrased out what was rolling around in my head. Was looking for some reassurance that I wasn't missing something here. Pot is up to 145°F. Pickup is pre-warmed. Should be done in ~ 20 seconds.

I pour out some of the wax.
If it has a cover, I let cool upside down so the liquid cools against the cover.
I do that with tele neck pickup too.
I try to get the pickup against the cover before potting.
