  • MWS 42 AWG plain enamel wire

    Dear Members,

I'm runnig out of my Elektrisola / Remington 42 AWG PE wire.
This time i'm searching for another supplier, just to try something else.
I made some great pickups with Elektrisola, but there's maybe an slightly upgrade in quality of the sound.

Do anyone use MWS 42 AWG plain enamel wire?
Do someone noticed a tonal difference between the modern enamel wires?

    Best regards,
    Arpad

    Wire is sold by size.
MWS sells both min/nom, and nom/max.
    Most guys use the min/nom.
    MWS sells elektrisola.
Tell them you want a dealer discount.

      Thanks Terry,

So MWS sells rebranded (or OEM) Elektrisola wires? Are you shure?
I got a qoutation from MWS, prices are identical to Electrisola.
But if they are identical.... there is no need to change my source.
      I use the Min-Nom too.

Never dealt with BAE Wire... are they good quality wires?
Or they sell the Elektrosila wires too?

Elektrisola sells 90%+ of all magnet wire these days.
It boils down to what the price is.
Remington is pretty high on the PE.
They are a great place to buy Poly wire.
Unless you are making replica pickups, I would use Poly not PE.
Poly solders easily, it is easier to see, and is much cheaper.
Whether Poly and PE sound different is debatable.
Wire OD, and Ohms per foot is the main determining factor, IME.
I save my high dollar PE for rewinds and cork sniffers, and charge accordingly.

The only other magnet brand of PE wire other than elektrisola, that I know of, is A.W.
American Wire/American Alloy Wire Home Page
You have to buy fairly large quantities, and they only have occasional runs.
If you want wire that sounds different, uou may want to buy a roll of MWS nom/max.
          It does sound different IMO.

What's nom/max? Elektrisola doesn't describe it on their page.

                Look at the chart.
                http://www.mwswire.com/pdf_files/mws..._5_6_33_34.pdf
Headings at the top by size, Min Nom. Max.
Wire in the Min/nom size will be in that size range, and variation.
Wire in the Nom/Max, will be larger and vary in that size range.
The larger the wire, the more room it takes on the bobbin, and the lower resistance the wire will be per foot.
Wire in the 50s and 60s was usually larger than the wires today.
Wire seems to run on the small size these days.
As far as what they sound like, you would just need to experiment, and come to your own conclusions.

I've never tried the nom-max wire. But ordering 6 lbs just to try is not cheap.
That's enough wire for 50 humbuckers, or so.

The guys at MWS are very nice persons, but why they don't have material samples?

So any opinions of the nom-max version of the eletrisola 42 AWG plain enamel wire is welcome.
                    I trust you guys.

The big PE will make a Strat SC come to life.
                      My nom/max is REA brand.
                      Here's the specs on mine.
                      Brand Type Bare OD Ohms/10ft
                      Rea Label 42 Brown Plain Enamel .002526 .002830 16.1

I really like having different sizes of wire in stock.
It gives more fexibility in winding.
I have 3 different sizes of 42 SPN Poly.
I use all of it for different projects.
But, don't buy any additional wire on my account.

Does REA sells smaller quantities? 1 lbs or so?

I bought the REA Several years back from MWS.
                          I think Elektrisola bought REA.
Elektrisola has bought up most of the small wire companies.
Send Diana at MWS a email and see what all they have, they may still have some of the large REA.
It would be in a 5-6 lb roll.

REA sold the small wire division to Elektrisola.
REA kept the large wire division.
