  • Degaussing ceramic magnets

    Hello,
Is it possible to degauss ceramic magnets ? If so how do you do it with large neos ? I am talking about the bar magnets that come on the Asian humbucker and single coils.

Due to their nature, it's not possible to degauss by say, 20% like alnicos, and even if it was possible, the tonal footprint won't change, it'll just get weaker.

Wonīt speak about pickup sound, thatīs your thing, just about the magnets themselves: you can demagnetize Alnicos and with more difficulty ceramics, by going again all around: first you magnetize them the opposite way, then remagnetize a little less.
Maybe rather than demagnetize I should call it magnetize to a weaker level.

If an electromagnet, you drive it with a Variac set to a lower voltage, repeat and measure a couple times until you get the right voltage, then note it for future use.

A friend of mine does it to get the exact final Q on Hi Fi speakers he builds.

I suppose you can do something like that with rare earth magnetizers, when remagnetizing you separate them a little and maybe insert some non magnetic shims to guarantee separation and a weaker field.

Of course, itīs simpler if you start with fresh still unmagnetized ones, itīs easier going up or adding, than going backwards.
