I built one a dozen years ago with the uncalibrated Hall Effect Device and it works great for relative but not absolute measurements. Now if I could just compare my readings with those from a calibrated Gaussmeter I would be set...

Does anyone know if the HEDs are still available from the Radio Shack website or is there an alternative source?

If I knew how well it turned out I would have opted for the calibrated HED. I mounted the guts inside a small plastic utility box from RS and covered the HED with heat shrink tubing and wired up red and white probe leads to banana plugs to connect to a DMM.

P.S. As for ones currently available I would want to hear what pickup makers say about them. I never did hear how exactly to use them so I included a small gap in the heat shrink tubing and then touch the magnet. From what I just read here I guess you could make measurement outside the pickup, too.

The Allegro A1302 is $1.40 at Tayda. Some of the newer devices are listed at the usual suspects (Mouser, Digikey, etc.)

I'm still working on my project. Can you give me some advise of what kind of options should be available in such a gaussmeter? I was thinking about giving a possibility to change the measurements units (from Gauss to miliTesla) but is it really needed? It will just change the display from e.g. "1234" to "123.4".
The calibration will be done during startup procedure so it's not needed in the menu. During the startup also the firmware version will be displayed.
PEAK measurement will be displayed together with the CURRENT results (so additional option in the menu is not needed).
The only option that I could think of is to change the measurement method to AVERAGE - to display an average value of some measurements (while changing the position of the meter) but in this case it would be needed to mark the beginning and the end of the measurements. Is such a functionality needed?
To me it seems that the menu is not needed at all. Or, you would like to have something special included?

Well I bought this one. https://www.ebay.com/itm/WT10A-LCD-T...53.m2749.l2649 It seems to work. It measures in millitesla, so you just have to mentally move the reading one digit to the left. I can't vouch for the accuracy and have nothing to compare it to, but I am getting readings I would expect. Thanks for the help and suggestions!
