Help with begginer winding

Hi,
I'm trying to rewind old Hofner 511 staple pickups. I'm using 44Awg and after 5000 winds I'm only getting Mili Ohm readings. I should be getting 4-5 k on each coil. I'm checking the coils by them selves right after the wind. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be great. CW winding.

Milli (m) Ohm or Meg (M) Ohm?
DMMs typically don't have a milliOhm range.

In case of doubt post a picture of the display showing the reading.
