  • Pickup Design

Hi all, I wanted to introduce myself. I'm a retired Electronics Engineer and interested in building my own pickups. I've been playing for 41 years now and have built a couple of guitars. I was given a spec sheet for Carvin but would like to learn about P90s, Humbuckers and single coils. Any suggested reading or training videos would be appreciated. I would like to learn about gaussing, magnets and how the number of coil windings and type of potting effect tone. Thanks, chears

Just use the forum's search function, a lot of good info to be found.
    Or ask specific questions here.

Here are some good links about how pickups fundamentally work

      Helmuth Lemme http://www.buildyourguitar.com/resources/lemme/

Manfred Zollner's work, I think about 30 years worth of aggregated research, is being translated from German to English one chapter at a time by a group called GITEC, so most of this is newly available:

I love these sites. I check in regularly to see if there is newly translated material
If I have a 50% chance of guessing the right answer, I guess wrong 80% of the time.

As a matter of fact they just released three articles on the technical break down of Wide Range Humbuckers, including listening tests and audio files. Their commitment to science is uncommon in this area of interest.
