On a Jazzbass coil (ao) there are 2 magnets per string. Some brands put them closer together than others. What woud the effect be of how close or wide they are?

If they are closer together the field will be a little bit stronger. When the magnets are farther apart it probably suppresses the even order harmonics produced by the guitar string when it moves perpendicular to the axis of the magnet and coil, since the magnetic field becomes more homogeneous within the area of string movement. It becomes less like a pole piece and more like a rail. If the magnets are closer together it's more like having just a single magnet. Any event the difference wouldn't be audible, because the voltage produced by perpendicular string movement is very small to begin with. It's probably an aesthetic decision.
