  • Need some pointers for th $1 winding machine.

A trip to the good will just yeilded me a working pioneer reel to reel tape machine for exactly $1!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now what the hell do I do withit?
I've got two motors at least one which is reverseable, a five digit reversable and resetable counter, push botton operation. Seems like a "reel" score. I havn't seen anyone using a reel to reel for a winding machine yet.

I have yet to tear this apart (I literally bought this an hour ago) but I'm wondering how to mount the flats for winding and whether or not I want to attach a chuck to the axl and what that will look like. I'm not, at this point too concerned with tensioning. I've been operating with a table mounted drill and my pattented "Flatwork on a spinning stick" method. It has worked well for the first two months of my 300 part plan to take the pickup world by storm. I like the Idea of a dedicated winding machine, I think it would get me in the shop even more, and the thought of building my own is very appealing.

I'm envisioning a pretty simple device here; motor, wire guide, counter, stop go and veriable speed. I'm not too worried about the actual electrical part of it, what I don't know (could fill a library) I can get help with, I'm more interested in making it practical, useful and labor efficient as possible at a hobbiest level. As well as what I should be thinking about as far as conecting a drive shaft to the motor. So, I guess my greatest hurdle is getting a universal mounting system and then getting it to spin.
I will try get some pics of the parts and process as I get going, but that in itself will require a new set of skills for me. Thanks for any of your help in advance. Please assume I'm pretty thick skinned and just thick in general if I'm asking too much at once. Thanks again.

    Hey there,

Congrats on your new purchase.. This could be a very fun project!

I dont have a ton of time to write tonight as i've got 122 emails in the inbox and need to be working on that. There is actually a pickup winder out there that you could use as a basis... Check out this winder:

It has 2 sets of 2 heads - Basically 2 reel to reel machines. I think the hard part for you would be devising a traverse. But if your ingenious Im sure you could do it.

Here's a couple pictures of various winders in the style you mention.

Which Pioneer did you get? R707? I have one of those just sitting in the basement waiting for rebirth. Nice reel to reel BTW.

You might be able to do something using a reel, maybe have interchangeable reels for whatever bobbin type you want to wind. You'll also need to watch the counter, there may not be a 1:1 correspondence to turns, although it would be mega cool if there was.

IIRC you'll also have to deal with the lock mechanism for the reels, they stick out quite a ways from the hub.

Way cool idea though!! Please let us know how it turns out, and show pics if you can.

        ...

        The Model is 1011L.
I was thinking about using Reels as mountings. I have some (had some?) some where around here. I may just have to track a few down. That whould almost be too easy. That lock mechanism is a concern. The interior of the cylinder is threaded so I was debating using the lock in what ever guisse the machine eventually takes on. It could work to my advantage.
BTW The counter is 1:1 ratio, so I've got that working for me...which is nice.

Thanks for the interest and help.
