  • Winder Idea

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum. I have been researching pickup winders on the internet and had this thought. Has anyone made a winder from an old reel to reel tape recorder? I have seen sewing machines used as winders etc. What is everyone's thoughts on using a reel to reel tape recorder? Looking forward to hearing any feed back. Cheers!!

It's been done. It works. Unfortunately the tape counter won't count actual turns but it will allow you to make identical coils. Most pickups wouldn't fit on the reel spindle so you will need to make a faceplate. Speed control may be difficult unless you have a deck with DC motors driving the reels.

Thanks David. So do you think it's worth persuing or should I go with the sewing machine route? cheers

If you have both at hand I'd steer you towards the sewing machine because that's what I know best. That said, you don't really need speed control and some form of counter is better than no counter. You can figure out a mathematical constant to get close to actual turns from the tape counter.
