Pickup winder and other stuff

All you need to do to reverse a winding direction is to flip the bobbin over on the winder. This is not rocket science folks. A double ended winder or one that reverses directions is superfluous. I have yet to see a bobbin that can't be flipped over, someone correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Flipping the bobbin over (excusing my typo) is the second option I suggested. Maybe it would also be worthwhile to also mention that your are going to need to build a jig (not a big deal I know) to accommodate the protruding magnets on the top face if he is going to flip over a Strat bobbin.

Without a sculpered plate to bolt to, It's not necessarily that easy to flip a Staggered pole Strat coil.
It won't just fit on a flat plate. I know you have especially made stuff for that David, I don't.
You can't do that on a speed bump Pickup either.
But, in your defense David, You can do most.
It also depends on which winder your using, and how it is made.

Good points, that's good to know.
I have one solution I've used for several years now with the protruding magnets -I double-stick-tape strips of 3/32" forbon on either side of the backplate center to allow the magnets to drop into the resulting slot. There are usually low tech solutions to most problems so you don't have to have a machine-shop (but I'm not giving up my machine shop...)

Then I'm in a scramble.
Also if your like me, you wind better on one end of the machine.
I wind better, facing to the right of the winder, Thus CCW, unless I turn the work Over.
I'll have to try the Forbon trick.

Tnx for the info boys. I have speak with my friend and he say me that to build a winding machine need to 100 € (I live in Italy) and a lot of work. I prefer to buy a finish winding machine.

I'm assuming that your are saying that you can just reverse the electrical polarity to give the same effect as CW to CCW winding (e.g middle pickup on a Strat for noise cancelling in positions 2 and 4)?

That is the way most of us make a strat RWRP.
on Middle Pickup Ground Finish, Feed the start.
If you have the capability to wind the other way nothing wrong with that either.
I just rewound a Duncan Humbucker, and it was wound CCW.
Through the years Fender has done them every which way.

Sidewinder

Hi, My friend recently bought a Sidewinder and the first thing we did was to pull it apart.

It has a chunky DC motor, a good quality Maxtronics pulse width modulator speed controller, a good strong serrated drive belt, and photo diode for the counter.

It also has an on-off foot switch, forward and reverse and I think now the counter also counts down.

In my personal opinion and from an engineering point of view, as a marketed product it probably could have been a little better assembled and refined.

The only thing I really don't like about it is the motor, it's very notchy and won't spin freely if you need to peel wire off, but I can live with that.

The price has come down to a competitive and reasonable level and all in all It's a good strong reliable winder. I have just finished winding a pair of humbucker's on it and I found it very easy to use and very accurate. it can operate quite fast and the motor can take a load easily without slowing.

If you just want to purchase some thing off the shelf that works, I'll give it a thumbs UP

Hi Terry, yes I have been very successful in making the base plates, you can see them here on this thread if you like although I ended up buying kits from stewmacs and I wound a couple of PAF style humbuckers.
