  • Finished my Pickup Winder....Almost! Where to put my wire guide?

I finished up the mechanicals on my pickup winder last night,

Seems to work quite well, well balanced through the full RPM range (35-1475), the counter keeps track etc.

My question is how far away do I mount my wire guide?

I have adjustment vertically, and I can see from others that I keep the guide below the center-line of my shaft.

I don't really want to drill and tap a series of holes and go by trial and error.

    Any suggestions or preferences?

Can you post a picture, that would help.

The guide can be quite close as long as it doesn't get in the way of your longest coils. What's more important is the felt tensioner which should be as far away as you can get it, 1-2 feet is ideal.

the greater distance your limiters are from you faceplate ,the wider the traverse/(distance between your limiters )that you will need
& the angle of the wire coming over your guide does effect tension

For scale purposes, the black base is 10 x 10" and the centerline of the shaft is 9.25 inches above the base.

The arms are rather large (3x7x.375) It's what I had laying around, I can get the wire guide and limiter lock collars about 1/4" away and feel pretty comfortable.

As this will set on my portable bench, I can run a felt tensioner about 2 feet away.( I hadn't planned on one, but I'm here to take advice)

My biggest fear is breaking wire. That stuffs expensive!

          Thanks for the tips.

            Maybe a necro-post but whatevs.

You should learn to splice and solder it. Breaks WILL happen from time to time. No need to be OCD about it. One or two splices wont really affect the outcome.
