Pickup Formulas

I am having some trouble in finding the correct formulas in order to make a single coil pickup for my final project.
I also had some difficulties in finding the correct wire so I have used a thinker one (.4 inches).
Does it really matter?
Please help me ASAP as my time is running out and I feel kind of lost.
