  • Sony Reel to Reel

I have an old Sony Reel to Reel tape player that I bought many years ago for $100. I doubt I could get much for it if I tried to sell it, but the thought occurred to me that it might make an ideal candidate for a pickup winder. It has three speeds, and I can also run it in reverse. It also has a counter. Has anyone used one of these for a winder? Anyone have any thoughts about whether this would be a good candidate for a pickup winder? I'm also wondering if the speed would be acceptable and if the counter would be adequate. I would certainly appreciate any feedback you would be willing to offer! Thanks!

Undoubtedly you could get this to wind a pickup but it seems like it would be somewhat impractical in the long run as you have no speed control and your counter isn't telling you much about the actual number of turns however you could figure out a system to keep track using a multiplier. Tape is coming back with the hip kids so just sell the thing and buy a sewing machine instead.
