  • Sheaves (a.k.a. pulleys)

I am slowly but surely building my winder. I mounted the bobbin shaft bearings this evening (Nice 6906 3/8" flanged bearings). To my surprise, one of the sheaves that I had in my junk box has an enormous amount of wobble. The bore is oversized enough to shim, but the wobble is too great to shim out. I ordered this particular sheave several years ago from McMaster-Carr. It looks like it was manufactured by Chicago Die Casting. I ordered several 3/8" bore sheaves in different diameters from another supplier earlier today. If these sheaves wobble like a wino after a hard night of drinking, I am going to look for machined sheaves.

Well, I'd still be tempted to try and return them to McMaster Carr but it's probably too late for that. If you don't mind loosing a bit of diameter you could just have the wobbly pulley re-machined on a shaft mounted between lathe centers.
Consider getting toothed pulleys off ebay.
