And *that's* the "warm and friendly" aspect: getting you answers which help you solve your problem.
If I fall in a river, I'd much prefer a few grumpy old men who pull me out of it, than a bunch of useless people who say "we'll miss you, you "were" our best friend, bye bye"
    Oh well.
    Yeah, what he said.

One thing you will find as a dead-end around here is if you start asking about PAF's. The local PAF-mongers will jump in with vagueries (and sometimes dis-information), they are quite covetous of their (cough, cough) ..."research".

      Y'alls.

As I read the CUB diagram, you can directly connect the OPTO output to it without any other voltage supply.
The CUB counter supplies all the necessary pull-up voltage and internal resistors.
The OPTO emitter side is the one that needs an external PS/wall wart.

The only other admonition is to *carefully* read over the OPTO 755 TAZ wire coloring.

You may now return to surfing porn sites and shagging sheep.

Correct. A while ago I upgraded from a reed switch to an optical. Big difference and now 100% accurate at any speed. Reed switches are not the answer if you plan on spinning up past 7-800 RPM. My old Veeder Root from the original build around 1993 was more accurate than the Cub 5 with a reed switch.

I used the Optek and a Cub 4 (it may be a Cub 5, cant remember) and a Nokia 5v DC wall wart. The actual voltage of the Nokia 5v wall wart was 9v+ so you need to be sure and test them. IIRC it called for a 380k resistor. I didn't have one so a 470k was used instead.
The duty cycle was 50 hz so I blacked out 1/2 the disc. Works great!

I suspect you may mean 380 and 470 OHM resistors.

          That was inspired.

Now, about that porn surfing and sheep shagging...
