my old Mitutoyo Coolant Proof LCD Micrometer
are the new one on ebay Good enough to examine the thickness of the wire from 38awg-45awg?

You may need to calibrate it if the ring torque isn't perfect. Typically you want your measuring device to measure at 10x the accuracy of your actual needs. I'd use an optical comparator to avoid crushing the wire diameter. Then again how important is the data you are collecting to your final product?

      thanks david

The truth is that i dont know how important is the data i am collecting to my final product
becuse i know that thare are Variables of wire Thickness Within the same spool
i need to know if the wire is 0.06350 or 0.06604 mm
the digital micrometer have 0.001mm so i can use it right?

how can i calibrate it ?
      Optical Comparator is very Expensive
Why you need a device that is so accurate
      what do you do?

Sorry I missed a decimal point in the metric conversion to my beloved inch standard. Yes this micrometer will get you the necessary resolution and then some. Unfortunately, as I'm sure you know already, it will also have a tendency to flatten the wire and change the measurement. As long as you can get consistent and useful measurements from one sample to the next it shouldn't matter that much. I think we can only suggest that you get it and report back to us as to it's suitability.

thanks David King i will do it
from my experience I learned that the main difference between American products and Chinese products with iso9000 and up is how long it takes them to break down

            A little off topic, but?
            I have a venier Micrometer.
the dial is a little off.
When you close the Mic with nothing in it, the scale is off a little.
            Can that be calibrated?
I have the low budget Harbor freight model.
0 to 1" Range Digital Micrometer
I really like it, and finally learned how to read the scale.
            A bit tricky at first.

              Terry,

You should have gotten a wrench or two with your mic and possibly a set of pictorial instructions for resetting 0. They mostly work the same way so look for generic instructions online as a starting point.

I prefer the non-digital venier micrometers. Accurate enough @ .0001 and inexpensive at ~ $15 when they are on sale at the infamous Canadian Tire Store. Ratchet thimble, a calibration wrench and instructions for those who have difficulty understanding how to read a venier scales.

If you are wondering how significant micrometer measurement is relative to 42/43 wire, here is a little pictorial representation. Assume the wire is about the diameter of a human hair.

I don't think that colour matter so much as it quite often comes from a bottle which yields statistically invalid observations in the data set. I think a much more reliable parameter is age. Older = Thinner.

One way to reduce the crushing of the wire is to zig-zag a piece, so there are say five parallel strands between the jaws of the micrometer.

Perhaps when one has that ruler out (doing the Ohms-per-foot check) at that time one just happens to have several parallel strands to measure
