  • Low-Priced Winders on eBay

    Hey Guys,

These winders are available on ebay if anyone is interested. They are not mine, and I wont be buying them, but maybe you would be interested. They have built in counters so I could see them being extremely useful for reverse engineering pickups for data or repair applications. If I remember correctly I was told the gear ratio is 8:1 on the second one, may be the same for both.

You'd still need to turn the crank 1000 times to wind a single coil. We aren't quite that low-tech and a nice home built, electric winder would probably cost considerably less anyway.

I dont think it would be that laborious. And when you are doing work on, or reverse engineering a pickup. Having complete control could be very helpful. I wouldnt really call it "low tech"... just a much more manual approach. Doing actual winding would be quite easy. I want to mention - both of these can be run by a motor. You dont have to hand-crank them. I just think the crank comes in handy for delicate operations. I also havent seen that many homebuilt winders that are as resilient and heavy-duty as these are. These things are just short of being bomb-proof

While driving these with a motor is possible, in most cases we'd want the gearing to go the other way. Most easily controlled motors are too fast to begin with. I guess you could drive it backwards but then your counter would be off by a factor of eight.
Lastly gears are noisier than belts.
